FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What's the difference between DC and DCC?
DC: Direct Current is a unidirectional flow of electric charge. In a DC system, the current flows continuously in one direction from a positive terminal to a negative terminal. DCC: Digital Command Control is a method of controlling model trains or other devices using digital signals. It involves sending encoded digital commands over the power lines (rails) to control multiple trains independently.
  • I've seen the same model loco on eBay a bit cheaper?
Sometimes other sellers can offer a cheaper price but watch the conversion rates postage costs and add it up to ensure its a better deal. All of Track Hobbies stock is based in Melbourne Australia, plus we offer a flat postage rate!
  • Can I run DC loco's on a DCC layout?
I would advise against it. Keep DC trains on DC track layouts and DCC Trains on DDC track layouts.
  • What is DCC ready?
Basically it means the the DC locomotive has the necessary hardware to be upgraded to DCC.
  • Why do you only stock American model trains?
For two reasons really. I think the Australian model train market is well catered for through existing online and hobby shops and the other reason is because of the volume of diversity in US rail companies active over the last 100 years giving modellers a great range of themes and choices in their layout.
  • Should I buy N Scale or H.O Scale trains if I'm starting out?
Both are great scales but it comes down to how much space you have. If you are tight on space when building a layout, consider N Scale. Both N and H.O scales are well supported when it comes to creating your layout.
